Healing 'the heart' of Africa

Thursday, 05 July 2012 by Mireille Singh

The Democratic Republic of Congo, located in the heart of the African continent, is labelled as the rape capital of the world!

According to the United Nations, “it’s the worst place to be for a woman.” An average 42,000 women and children a year are estimated to have survived a rape. In some areas that 1 in 3 women!

However, in this horrific, dark and dismal place Heal Africa is the shining a light! Founded by Dr. Lyn Lusi who together with her husband (a Congolese doctor), set up the Heal Africa hospital. Using their medical skills to bring healing to thousands of women, they’re also simultaneously transforming women’s social status in the community.

Dr. Justin Paliku Lussy, (Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Heal Africa), speaks to us about his work to bring healing and care to thousands of women.

"Women are important people; they’re the ones who buy the food to feed their families. Without women, families and the community can’t function, which is devastating for the country." - Dr. Justin Paliku Lussy
