Lofty Goals

Though aiming for the Oympics is a lofty goal, there are some among us who may have had the aspiration at some point in our lives, if only briefly.

Jane shares the inspiring story of a young man in China who made it his goal to become part of the Olympics in some way, and was willing to brave anything to get to London 2012...

Scott Ferrier and Alison Inverarity - Former Olympians

Former Australian Olympic High Jumper & Commonwealth Gold Medallist Alison Inverarity and former Australian Olympic Decathlete & Commonwealth Silver Medallist Scott Ferrier join Brett and Jane for a chat about London 2012, past triumphs and normal life in between!

The Five Seconds Rule - Fact or Folklore?

Some of us subscribe to the five seconds rule, some call it the three second rule - the rule that if you pick up a piece of food within 5 seconds (or 3) after dropping it onto the floor, it is still safe to eat? (presumably because five seconds is not long enough for the germs to transfer onto the food?!?!).

Ever wondered whether this rule is backed up scientifically?  Or whether it is a rule that we have invented to allow ourselves to eat what we accidentally dropped?

The Roads Not Taken

Taking a moment to get all deep and philosophical, Craig and Jane discuss times where their whole life direction could've taken a huge turn, and what caused the change in the first place.

Crossroads are a part of life, but we must also learn to 'downsize' and reflect on the opportunities that are the right thing for us, which can even involve changing our perceptions of our goals.

Jackie Lauder - Sport Psychologist

Craig and Jane chat to leading sport psychologist Jackie Lauder on the subject of nerves, especially poignant with the Olympics looming on the horizon.

Jackie has found herself in demand leading up to the big event, even using Skype to contact athletes in London. She discusses techniques for dealing with nerves, such as reminders that athletes are in control of their performance and addressing every possibility.

Jackie also talks about family dynamic of competing athletes, as well as the concept of conquering fear.

Sensory Memories

Memories can be triggered by all sorts of random things, from unique smells to odd colour schemes. The concept of sensory memory is still unclear, but we all have times when a whiff of a random smell has caused unexpected flashbacks...

Along with input from listening Melburnians, Craig and Jane share their memory memories from as far back as 115 years ago (seriously).

Do artificial sweeteners increase our cravings?

A bit of a history lesson today as the Grandstanders explore the story behind the accidental discovery of artificial sweeteners.  This in turn then leads to a discussion of the link between our body's psychology and physiological response (ie. what we think and how the chemicals in our body react).  Does having artificial sweeteners increase our sugar cravings?  How does stress impact on our bodies?

Nina Stabey on the Ins and Outs of an Alkaline Diet

The Grandstanders have unofficially adopted Nina Stabey as our resident Nutritionist and Naturopath.  She talks us through the details of an Alkaline Diet: keeping our minerals in balance.  Listeners can tune in to learn about mineral depletion and also top tips for re-mineralising your body.

Keep yourself energised and your body healthy for the winter months!
